Conference for the Western Gateway 2024
Recently, GW-SHIFT had a strong presence at the Western Gateway Conference, where we showcased our latest advances in hydrogen production and usage, contributing to the conversation around the South West and South Wales' emerging hydrogen economy. Dr James Courtney, alongside Prof Xiaohong Li (Co-director of GW-SHIFT), exhibited and presented their work. Key figures from the GW4 Alliance, such as Joana Jenkinson, director of GW4 and integral to the GW-SHIFT project, were also in attendance, further strengthening our collaboration. Steph Jary, Deputy Director of the Western Gateway and Chair of the GW-SHIFT advisory board, played a pivotal role in organising the conference.
Activity Highlight
One of the standout moments was Xiaohong Li’s participation in a panel discussion on Net-Zero. Alongside this, we had an interactive stand showcasing the potential of hydrogen. GW-SHIFT demonstrated the production of hydrogen and its application in fuel cells, using hands-on outreach equipment like the hydrogen-powered bike, a Scalextric set, and hydrogen economy kits.
These tools were not only engaging but instrumental in communicating the real-world possibilities of hydrogen technology to both the public and decision-makers alike.
Impact of the Day
The conference provided a platform to discuss the outreach and public engagement efforts that GW-SHIFT are spearheading. By educating civic leaders and the general public, we aim to empower them with the information needed to make informed decisions about hydrogen. This engagement is critical as we continue to foster a nascent hydrogen economy in the South West and South Wales regions.
We also took the opportunity to highlight our sprint projects and industry relationships, illustrating the investment potential these regions represent. The discussions held during the day helped drive forward new project ideas and collaborations, connecting developers, innovators, and universities with the knowledge and policymakers necessary to turn these ideas into reality.
Through these interactions, we continue to strengthen the hydrogen value chain across the region, driving innovation and opening the doors for industry players to enter this growing market.
GW-SHIFT is excited about the connections and opportunities that emerged from the conference, and we look forward to continuing our mission of creating a more sustainable, hydrogen-powered future.
